NHS Confederation – Committee Member Opportunities

The NHS Confederation is seeking independent individuals to bring fresh perspectives, impartiality and external expertise to strengthen the decision making of two of our core board sub-committees:

  • Finance and Operations Committee or
  • Remuneration Committee.

These roles are vital to supporting the trustees in ensuring strong oversight, strategic guidance, and robust governance across the organisation.

Please note that prior experience at the NHS is not required.

About the Roles

Committee members are vital in providing strategic oversight and constructive challenge to the executive team; supporting the trustees to ensure the organisation meets its regulatory obligations; and champion the organisation’s ethical framework and its values, not least its commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

As a Finance and Operations Committee Member you will:

  • Support and challenge the organisation’s financial strategy, investment decisions, and operational performance.
  • Gain assurance over financial performance and compliance.

As a member of the Remuneration Committee you will:

  • Support and challenge the organisation’s approach to executive pay, performance management, and workforce strategy.
  • Providing independent scrutiny and assurance to ensure fair, transparent, and strategic remuneration practices
  • Considering EDI as a core part of your values in decision making and discussions.

Skills and experience

For our Finance and Operations Committee we are seeking 2 Independent Committee members to join our team. The ability to interpret and challenge financial information will be key.    Whilst prior Committee experience is not necessary, we are particularly keen to hear from individuals who can strength our committee’s skills base with:

  • Strong investment experience, particularly in a charitable setting where wider Environmental, Social and Governance considerations can come into play
  • Strong accounting/financial experience, particularly in a charitable setting where wider Environmental, Social and Governance considerations can come into play

The skillsets for each role will be different - not every accountant will have investment experience and it is quite possible that an investment expert will have no accounting experience at all.

For our Remunerations Committee we welcome applications from individuals with experience in remuneration and workforce strategy. Whilst prior Committee experience is not necessary, we are particularly keen to hear from individuals who can strength our committee’s skills base with:

  • Good understanding of executive and workforce strategies, particularly in a values-driven organisational context

Terms of Appointment

Term: Three years, with the possibility of renewal for a second term.

Time Commitment: Four meetings per year (usually remote and usually 2-3 hours in length), plus preparation time.

Remuneration: Voluntary role. Reasonable expenses reimbursed.

Location: Meetings are usually held remotely or in London/Leeds.

Support given: We will work with you to ensure an appropriate induction
