About the role

As a Senior Communications Officer you will: 

  • Support the team with strategic communications planning and content management across UPD’s owned channels to promote key messages, publish the outputs of projects and/or support campaigns. These include:
    • Social media platforms (analysing engagement and trends to improve performance).
    • Website (overseeing development, designing new content and reviewing and updating existing content, ensuring it provides the best user experience).
  • Work with strategic partners to amplify UPD's message and reach (as appropriate).
  • Support UPD’s relationship with the media:
    • Liaise with journalists to promote UPD’s research and policy influencing activity and to position UPD as a key voice in health data.
    • Work with the team to respond to media enquiries, providing comment on sometimes sensitive and complex issues.
    • Draft press releases, statements and features, as well as media briefings for the Head of UPD to prepare them for media and comms activity.
    • Manage a media monitoring system and media stakeholder map to keep the team aware of and responsive to relevant media

About you

We would love to hear from you if you are: 

  • Experienced in managing traditional (e.g. press) and digital (e.g. social media, website) media
  • Skilled at writing press releases, media statements, web and social media content, handling media enquiries and briefing for interviews
  • Comfortable developing and managing relationships with external stakeholders and the media
  • Experienced in developing strategic communication plans and then evaluating and improving subsequent activity and campaigns
  • Confident in working independently while also being skilled at adopting a matrix working style to support the wider team

Established in 2016, Understanding Patient Data (UPD) is an independent initiative, hosted by the NHS Confederation, designed to support better conversations about the use of health data to improve patient care, population health, planning and research. Working with patients, charities, researchers and healthcare professionals, UPD has built a solid reputation as a trusted source of advice and objective, engaging research and information about the use of patient data in the UK.

This is a new role in the UPD team, taking on responsibility for the initiative’s external-facing communications channels, including the website, social media and media engagement. The Senior Communications Officer will work collaboratively with the UPD team to set measurable objectives, plan and manage communications outputs across a range of channels, draft content, lead on engagement with the media and monitor and evaluate communications impact for the initiative. The successful candidate will ensure that all communications activities reflect the broader vision and mission of UPD.
